Dennis Forbes writes on using Near Field Communications in a smartphone world:

I'm more interested in how it can enable the electronic propagation of the end product of the transaction: the receipt. ...  Given that we're in the era when Groupon-style virtual coupon-clipping is now cool, this would enable purchase optimizations, running your history through mining tools to provide optimization hints and to encourage more vigorous competition in the industry. You would have saved $57.65 last month if you did {XYZ}.

I'm definitely in favor of this - our NFC point of sale terminals should transmit transaction data - the types of tickets I purchase at the movie theater, even additional product information.  The stores can utilize this for upselling as well.  Maybe I forgot accessories?  I can puruse this at my leisure.  A merchant can offer coupons or deals as well.
